European Forum Wachau 2017

10.06.2017 - 11.06.2017

The last few years have shaken the faith of Europe's citizens in the protective function of the European Union: terror in European cities, the return of war to our continent, uncontrolled migration, new East-West bloc thinking, the financial crisis, coupled with Brexit and increasing nationalism, have called into question achievements and paradigms of the community that were thought to be firmly established. The EU also gives the impression that it is less and less able to cope with the challenges.

At the same time, the advantages of the community are increasingly taken for granted, while the disadvantages are no longer shared in solidarity. Europe's complex and barely comprehensible regulatory framework, which has grown over the years, has led to Europe being perceived as distant, foreign and alien. The proximity to Europe exists on the map, but no longer in the hearts of many citizens.

Brexit shows that a common Europe cannot be taken for granted. If we want to preserve it, we must succeed in reversing this trend.
But how can a united, borderless Europe bring its added value closer to Europeans so that everyone recognises the concrete benefits for themselves? What could lead the individual entrepreneur, the individual farmer, the student, the pensioner back to a commitment to the "European homeland"? How can the EU convince its citizens that it will successfully defend this homeland - the promised area of freedom, security and justice - and that it can hold its own against other international players? Conversely, we must also consider how people themselves can actively help to ensure that the European continent returns to peace and order and that Europeans once again see Europe as their home.
